About the event
Ruth’s meditative paintings have a stillness that invites refection. They explore aspects of fragility, memory and the transience of time. Ruth draws on the nature of heritage linens and personal objects that evoke human presence or absence.
"I began looking at fabric as an expression of the most basic elements of what it means to be human, as a symbol of life and universal humanity, thinking about the way fabrics conceal and reveal. As I explored the folds and gathers of the fabrics and the negative space around the form, I became increasingly fascinated by the idea of what was hidden, forgotten, lost.”
In her latest body of work, “Visitations”, heirloom fabrics and treasured objects are historically reconfigured. They become time portals to voices from the past suggesting different narratives and reminders of lives lived.
As emblems of the passing of time, they invite reflection on how we value the past and remember the people who made or treasured these items.
