Bernie Kirkham - Fragments Collection
Bernie has recently embraced a bold new direction with abstraction. As she explains, “I don't usually paint abstract art … I have really enjoyed exploring this new idea. I particularly like the textured, looser style I have used here. …
This exploration culminates in Fragments, her current abstract exhibition at ArtSelect Gallery in Newmarket.
In these new works, layers of past imagery peek through expressive textures, inviting the viewer to uncover hidden narratives and feel the energy of transformation.
What began as a boundary‑pushing experiment has blossomed into a powerful artistic statement—raw, textural, and open to interpretation. The Fragments collection reflects the artist's exploration of fragmentation and transformation.
Fragments marks a milestone in Bernie’s creative evolution, where imaginative storytelling meets abstract expression—and the result is a beautifully layered invitation into her artistic world.

Golden Fragments in the Sand
Soft organic forms evoke a sense of the quiet erosion of sand and ancient landscapes.
Gentle washes of colour suggest natural movement - like water shaping rock or wind over earth.
Embedded throughout the work are delicate touches of gold leaf. Glinting like hidden treasures or sunlit fragments. Subtle textures and tonal shifts whisper of stories just beneath the surface.

Both vibrant and dreamlike, full of movement, warmth, and the suspended stillness of summer.

Beach Fragments
What Remains. This atmospheric abstract painting soft, swirling forms evoking weathered rock, sand and drifting clouds. The surface appears marbled, almost ancient, as if nature itself has painted it—through wind, water, and decay. The painting holds a dreamlike quality, inviting contemplation and interpretation. There’s a strong sense of dissolution and emergence, as though forms are trying to materialize or disappear, where pieces of memory, self, or landscape remain only partially intact.
