Date: Tuesday 24 September 2024 Time: 6pm - 8pm Venue: ArtSelect Gallery, 19A Osborne Street, Newmarket Judy Curnow Judy's style is impressionism, bordering fauvism, enhancing the colours and tones of the natural world. Painting mainly landscapes Judy finds this genre invigorating and reaches into the core of her imagination as an artist. She is fascinated with light and its constantly changing effects. Meeting Tim Wilson, one of New Zealand's most acclaimed landscape artists in 2009 changed her life. After viewing Judy's work Tim offered to mentor her and take her work to another level. The amazing years spent with Tim enabled Judy's paintings to get to the level where they featured in his own exclusive gallery in Queenstown. As the value of Judy's paintings increased, so has her global profile and her work has become highly sought after in New Zealand and abroad. Painting full time from her studio in Akaroa, Judy draws inspiration from her surroundings. In her studio, Judy translates these observations from her life and selects her subjects with an eye attuned to their shape, colour, pattern and texture. She instinctively places these into balanced arrangements that reveal her renowned ability as a colourist and her confident eye for design. Within her detailed paintings Judy wishes her work to give the viewer a sense of happiness and wellbeing, beauty and abundance as our world needs so much more of that. This dynamic is evident not only in his motif selection, it can also be seen in his adept use of two and three-dimensional aspects. His approach is nuanced, balancing a naive charm in certain elements with the precision of hyperrealism in others. Each of Oliver's pieces is a labour of love, requiring months of dedication to meticulously layer multiple transparencies and achieve a truly distinctive aesthetic. "I prefer to work in oils. The medium allows for incredible depth, and I love how it can glow and shine differently with the changing light of the day," he remarks. Oliver's art emphasizes the allure of imperfections—broken glass, chipped paint, and discarded objects become focal points, intentionally highlighted for their unique beauty. "Everyday life's overlooked details can be remarkably beautiful, especially when illuminated just right." His works provide a subtle commentary on the urban decay of our world, juxtaposing the glossy debris of aimless consumption against older structures in need of continual upkeep and love. Having spent considerable time painting with and studying under the late Tim Wilson, Oliver seamlessly incorporates learned techniques into his art, evident in his sky work and masterful color blending. Each piece is not just visually captivating but also an exploration of the complex nuances within our ever-changing world..
